Sam's Secret Zoo

A zoo is a park with animals. The animals are usually from other parts of the world, or are animals that are endangered. People who work at zoos carry out research on the animals, and other people go along to the zoos to look at the animals - and learn about them. Most zoos are public places in big cities - but here is a story about a very private zoo. It's a garden. What animals do you think that you might see in a garden?nail biting

Sam's secret zoo page 1There was once a boy called Sam. He lived with his mum and dad in a large, low bungalow with a red roof. It was very, very hot in this country and all the adults used to spend long afternoons asleep.

But Sam never slept. He spent every afternoon in his amazing magical garden with all his animals. Sam was really crazy about animals – he had all the usual pets such as a dog and a cat and a bird, but Sam also had an amazing collection of unusual pets as well.

The garden at the back of the bungalow was a very exciting place. It was surrounded by huge trees at the back and had lush, tropical plants with big leaves on every side. This was perfect for hiding his pets.

When you came out of the back door there was a low wall at the bottom of the steps, which divided the terrace and the garden. Now inside this wall there lived a whole family. Sam came down the steps and pulled out a brick at the bottom of the wall. And there before his eyes was the whole family… of scorpions.

Sam was terribly interested in scorpions. He thought their red colour was wonderful. And he also liked the way that the baby scorpions climbed onto their mother’s back. Sam didn’t seem to care that scorpions have a sting in their tail – they didn’t seem to notice when he looked at them unless he brought them a few nice juicy insects to eat.

Sam loves animals and he has a secret zoo - his garden! He's out in the garden now visiting the animals that live there. What animals do you think he will find there?

Sam's secret zoo page 2Sam put the brick back in the wall and then walked further along the path which went through the trees. He looked up into a tree. This particular tree had bright red flowers and lots of leaves. But Sam saw something else. He saw the bird who lived in the tree - a bright red and green parrot.
"Hello," said Sam.
"Hello yourself," said the parrot. It really was quite friendly.

Sam continued his round of the garden. At the next tree he stopped again. This tree was much bigger and had very thick branches. Sam stared into the tree.
"Aha!" he said.

Sam saw a long green snake moving slowly round the branch. It was difficult to see the snake as its dark green markings looked just like the tree. But Sam knew where to look. Sam thought it was a pretty friendly snake - he didn't know that green mambas are extremely poisonous.

Sam went further along the path and looked into the next tree. Inside the two main branches he looked very closely. Yes… there it was! Sitting in the fork of the tree was a huge greeny-brown coloured monitor lizard. It had a large head and scales on its back. Its tail thumped the tree and made a noise.'Thwack!' The monitor lizard turned round, closed his eyes and went back to sleep.

Sam's secret zoo page 3Finally Sam turned back towards the house. He stopped at a big rock on the other side of the garden. He lifted the rock carefully. Under the rock was a hole. Sam looked inside. Ah yes … there it was - his pride and joy... a very large, hairy tarantula! Sam thought it was the most beautiful spider he had ever seen.

Just then his sister Susie came down the steps. Susie was two years older than Sam and always tried to tell him what to do.
"What are you doing?" said Susie. "What have you got there?"
Susie came over to Sam and looked under the rock.
She saw the tarantula and screamed.
"Aagh! It's a spider! Aagh! It's going to kill me!"

When the spider heard Susie screaming it woke up in a very angry mood. It was used to having a nice afternoon nap. The spider ran out of its hole under the rock towards Susie. This made Susie scream even more.
"Help! Mum! Sam's got a spider. Help! It's going to kill us all!"

At this point Sam's mum came rushing out of the house together with Mrs Trout who lived next door. Mrs Trout was a horrible woman who always shouted at Sam and made horrible ugly faces.
"Sam," shouted his mum, "what have you got there?"

Sam loves animals and he has a secret zoo - his garden. He's looked at all the animals in his garden, including a small one hidden under a stone - a tarantula spider! But his sister has seen it and isn't very happy!

Sam's secret zoo page 4By this time the spider had had enough. It decided to look for somewhere more comfortable to sleep. So up the steps it went while everyone else was running around in confusion looking for it.

Just as the spider reached the kitchen door Susie saw it.
"Oh no! It's going into the house!"
They all turned and looked at the door… and saw the spider disappear into the kitchen.

Sam ran up the steps as fast as he could. Inside the kitchen there was total chaos. Archie the dog was barking and running round in circles. Horatio the cat jumped on the table and screamed loudly.

Where was the spider? Sam looked up and saw the spider disappearing into the living room. By this time Susie, his mum and Mrs Trout had also rushed into the kitchen and were screaming their heads off.

Sam decided to get Archie to help. Maybe the dog could find the spider. The two of them walked slowly into the living room and looked around. There was no sign of the spider.

Suddenly they heard more loud screaming from the kitchen. The spider was heading towards Mrs Trout, who took one look and fainted into a heap on the floor.

Sam's secret zoo page 5Now the spider was getting faster. It went upstairs and looked for a comfortable bed to sleep in. Sam followed it with Archie at his heels. At the end of the corridor was Sam's bedroom. They went in and saw the spider sitting next to the window.

That was Sam's chance! He picked up the spider and threw it out of the window, far, far into the garden. Oh well, now it would have a new home in a different part of the garden.

Sam's mum and Susie rushed upstairs.
"You horrible boy!" shouted Susie.
"No, he's not horrible!" said Sam's mum. "He saved us from the spider! Let's go and have some cake!"
Sam laughed and Susie glared at him.
What a good thing they didn't know about Sam's secret zoo!

Hallo, students'
here is your homework

"Using Glogster for creating interactive online posters"

Create attractive and colourful Glogster posters with your pair on a theme: NO DRUG

Timing: a week

Technical requirements:

  • a computer per 2/3 students
  • headphones with microphones attached to the computers that you are going to use (optional)
  • ideally, a computer attached to a data projector for demonstrating the task to the class and reviewing their completed posters
  • an internet connection
  • Adobe Flash player plug-in installed on your computers

Preparation

1.Create an educational account with Glogster http://edu.glogster.com/ which is free.

  • You’ll have to click on the link in the email that the Glogster site will send you to activate your account.
  • You can create individual logins for each of your students if you wish, or you can simply get them to use your personal login.

2. Create a Glogster poster for yourself to get familiar with all the options available. It’s is a simple process and there’s a video tutorial that can help you at http://www.schooltube.com/video/1e9cf8d1092b27b2de8e/Glogster-Tutorial-Discovery-Education. With Glogster you can:

  • Choose the poster’s background (Wall) from the designs included in Glogster’s gallery or upload a picture of your own.
  • Add text in decorated text boxes and include hyperlinks to web sites.
  • Add graphics from a list that’s available on the site.
  • Add images: by linking to one you’ve found on the internet, uploading one from your computer or, if you have a webcam, by taking one.
  • Add videos: by selecting from a list of SchoolTube videos, by linking to a video you’ve found on the internet, uploading one from your computer or, if you have a webcam, by recording one.
  • Add sound: by linking to a recording you’ve found on the internet, uploading one from your computer or by recording sound with a mike attached to your computer.

Note: you won’t be able to check any hyperlinks you’ve added, play a video or hear sound while you’re in Edit mode. To do so you have to be in Preview mode or to view your Glogster poster after you’ve Saved and Published it.

3. Choose the topic or theme that your group is going to work on.

Demonstrating creating a glogster poster to your class

1. Log into your Glogster account.

2. When you have demonstrated all the possible options for creating a poster then clicks on SAVE AND PUBLISH:

  • You will be asked to give the Glogster a title, select a category for it and be given the option of making the poster public or private.

4. If you have a class blog or wiki, there is one more optional additional step: embedding your poster into a post:

  • Choose the destination where you want to embed your voki e.g. Blogger, WordPress etc and fill in the details on the form provided or copy the code that’s displayed and add it to your post.

Trouble-shooting
You can’t create a recording on your Glogster poster:

  • Check that the headphones/mike are correctly connected (many headphones have a pair of pink and green jacks that connect into the pink and green sockets on the computer).
  • Check that the sound has not been muted on the computer. For computers running Windows, click on the speaker icon on the bottom toolbar and make sure that mute hasn’t been checked or double-click on the same icon to open the settings window and check that the mike recording level is not set too low.

If your blog is with Blogger and you copied and pasted the code Glogster provided into your post, you might incur a bug: Blogger tells you that there is an error with your HTML code.

  • Click on the Edit HTML tab on your post and add at the end of your code. Your post will now publish successfully.

Night Skiing

Fill the blank spaces with much or many.
Example: How many blank spaces are there in this quiz? There are twelve.
Example: How much time will it take you? Just a few minute ________________________________________

Bob and Linda are planning a ski trip

Bob: Hey Linda. Want to come skiing with us?
Linda: You're not serious. It's five o'clock and it's getting dark.
Bob: I know, but we're going to Morin Heights. They have night skiing and it's not too expensive.
Linda: How.........is a ski pass?

Bob: After 6 p.m. it's only 10 bucks.
Linda: How.........people are going?

Bob: Eight in all, if you come.
Linda: Eight! How.........cars are you taking?

Bob: Just two, with four people in each. Coming?
Linda: Maybe I will. How..........time do I have to get ready?

Bob: Lots. We're not leaving until six.
Linda: I may need to go to the bank first. How.........money do I need?

Bob: Only about twenty bucks. Ten for the ski pass, three for gas, and if we get hungry, we can stop at a McDonald's. A big Mac's just a couple of bucks, and how..........big Macs can you eat?

Linda: Okay. I have enough money for that. So tell me, what are the skiing conditions like? How..........snow do they have at Morin Heights?

Bob: Lots. The skiing conditions are perfect. Trust me.
Linda: And how.........intermediate trails do they have? I'm not an expert skier.

Bob: Lots. Don't worry. You'll be fine.
(Later, on the way home from the ski hill)
Linda: Wow! What a great ski hill. I even skied on the expert run. I don't know how ..........times I fell, but it was a lot of fun anyway. So tell me, Bob, how..........do I owe you for gas?

Bob: Let me check how.........gas I have left in the tank. That's how.........I know how.........liters I used. Yeah, I used about 20 liters, so that's 12 bucks divided by four, so each person owes me three bucks. Is that okay?
Linda: Of course.:-bd
